30 years of LIFE Programme

The European Union LIFE Program is the only centrally managed financial instrument entirely dedicated to the protection of the environment, nature and climate.

May 21, 2022 The LIFE Program ended thirty years. During this period, over 5,000 projects benefited from the Programme's possibilities. It refered in the past and still refers to four areas:

• nature and biodiversity,
• circular economy and quality of life,
• climate change mitigation and adaptation,
• switching to clean energy.

The jubilee year celebrated in all European Union countries is an opportunity to present projects and activities for the environment, nature and climate.

It is an opportunity to exchange experiences and establish cooperation.

The official calendar of jubilee celebrations included 257 events related to the LIFE Program, which were organized almost all over the world. Among these events, there were 9 from Poland, and 5 were organized as part of the integrated project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored".

30 May 2022 - Educational and artistic happening "We paint the Silesian sky"

The event participants had the opportunity to take part in outdoor lectures, workshops, educational walks, specialist training, shows and games.

The subject of the meeting was related to the improvement of air quality, the benefits of green infrastructure in the city, counteracting unfavorable changes in the environment and climate, and energy transformation.

The culminating part of the event was an artistic happening with the participation of the students of the Art High School "Painting the Silesian sky". Each of the young artists made their own interpretation of the subject of heaven in Silesia in any painting or drawing technique. Together, all the works created an image of the Silesian sky.

The partners of the event were: the Silesian University of Technology, the Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal and the Silesian Botanical Garden, as well as the Complex of Art Schools in Katowice and the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów.

20 - 22 May 2022 - Ekozone "Warm, healthy, colorful"

As part of the Kalety City Days, a three-day large information and education zone related to clean air was organized. 

Adults found there expert advice on the requirements and possibilities of replacing furnaces and boilers with eco-friendly devices, sources of financing and other forms of support. It was also possible to obtain information on aid programs. 

A rich set of games and competitions related to the subject of clean air and the threat of smog has been prepared for children and adolescents.

18 - 20 May 2022 - Training in the field of detection of illegal combustion and compliance with the anti-smog resolution 

The Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal, the substantive partner of the project, together with the Silesian Voivodeship, organized a training for eco-managers of the "Silesia. Blue Sky restored" project, representatives of municipal and city guards, employees of municipal self-governments and institutions responsible for measures to improve air quality and carrying out control activities authorized by the municipalities. 

187 people from all over the Silesian Voivodeship took part in the meeting, which was held at the Silesian Museum.

1 July  - 31 August 2022 - "What's in the air?" Summer academy for counteracting low emissions

Low emissions are the main cause of poor air quality. That is why the Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship in every Tuesday and Thursday July and August will present the reasons and proposed actions to reduce harmful emissions.

Educational topics targeted at adults include, among others terms concerning: types of air pollutants, industrial and transport emissions, emissions from the municipal and residential sector, as well as suspended dust, smog, nitrogen oxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, the impact of air pollution on human health, monitoring air quality or actions to improve it.

1 July - 31 August 2022 - "Child and ecology, or mom, dad, show me how ..."

Children watch and imitate adults. They also love to do something together with their parents. To use this interest, the Eco-manager from the municipality of Krzyżanowice organizes a series of presentations of ideas on how to implement pro-ecological behaviors together with the child through play.

The series of 9 presentations will take place every Wednesday in July and August and will include: active sports holidays, where the food comes from, planting plants, waste segregation, composting, ecological shopping, healthy home cooking together, home preserves, brushing teeth and the problem of water.

6 July - 31 August 2022 - "SUMMER - Sense and Understand Main Matters of Eco Recreation. The Eco Tourism Summer Academy"

Holidays are the time of carefree trips and learning about the world. However, such activity also has an impact on the surrounding environment.

Every Wednesday in July and August 2022, topics related to the organization of tourist and leisure trips with respect to the principles of sustainable ecotourism will be presented.

Topics will be discussed on how to spend a vacation without harming the surrounding nature and leaving the smallest possible trace of yourself. Principles of responsible tourism will be presented, e. g. the impact of mass tourism on nature and how changing our behavior can reduce the negative impact on the environment.

27 July 2022 - "eco? -logically!" Crazy holidays at the library

Workshops for children and adolescents on shaping pro-ecological behavior. The workshops will take the form of competition between teams in three thematic blocks: ecological behavior at home, water pollution and taking care of air quality.

Participants will learn about positive ecological activities through games, competitions, art classes and discussions. They will also conduct scientific experiments to learn about the influence of human activity on the quality of water and air.

All participants will receive small gifts and diplomas.

25 August 2022 - Wicker Picnic

Holidays are a wonderful time for learning ecological behaviours. Therefore at the municipal picnic of Mszana there will be special Ecozone for residents: adults and children.
The Ecozone will be organised by ecomanager in the Project „Silesia. Blue Sky Restored”.

Ecozone will be a space where Mszana’s residents will be able to get knowledge and find entertainment. Adults will be informed about the obligation of replacing of obsolete heat sources, instruments of financial suport available to residents for heat source replacement, subsidies provided by various Polish institutions, power companies, etc.

On the other hand children will be entertained with ecological fun and games e.g. eco-stick man painting, solving ecology crosswords puzzles, talks about waste segregation and recycling, art contests, motion games.

7 – 28 September 2022 - September with ECODIY

The longer and longer evenings and the autumn weather are great opportunity to spend time with your child. One of the activity proposals for this time is games and toys creation from wood, stones and plastics intended for recycling.

Every wednesday of September, Ec-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will show you how in a few simple steps make games and toys yourself.

Joint DIY projects are also an opportunity for parents to talk to children on topics such as waste segregation or recycling of recyclable materials.

11 September 2022 - The Harvest Eco-Festival

The Harvest Festival is a traditional event celebrating the successful gathering of the year's crops.

Therefore at the municipal festival of Dąbrowa Zielona there will be special Ecozone for residents. The Ecozone will be organised by Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship .

Ecozone will be a space where residents will be able to get knowledge and find entertainment. Adults will be informed about the obligation of replacing of obsolete heat sources, instruments of financial suport available to residents for heat source replacement, subsidies provided by various Polish institutions.

Children will be entertained with ecological fun and games.

17 September 2022 - the Metropolitan Energy Days

Consulting, competitions, shows, experiments, games... The Silesian Voivodeship invites you to a meeting  which will take place during the Metropolitan Energy Days i.e. family picnic that will bring not only excellent entertainment, but also a lot of practical information.

Energy efficiency, adaptation to climate change, information on subsidies related to the modernization of heating systems – these are some of the topics discussed during this year's event.

In the meeting zone eco-managers will provide residents the information regarding replacement of obsolete furnaces, sources of financing and required documents.

In the children's zone there will be games and fun. Everyone, regardless of age, will find something interesting for themselves. 

On the town square there will be a bicycle cinema and bicycle stands for stationary competitions. You will also be able to create ecological bags, moss images or check your memory and lung capacity.

8 October 2022 - Ecozone “Under the blue sky not only about food”

As part of the Food Truck Rally, an eco-zone will be created, in which the eco-manager will provide information on energy efficiency, subsidies related to the modernization of heating systems, the obligation and the possibility of replacing outdated furnaces, financing sources and required documents.

Games related to clean air and environmental protection will be waiting for the youngest participants.

11 October 2022 - Theatrical performance “Econolulu”

As part of the project “Silesia. Blue sky restored”, a theatrical performance will take place.
Performance “Econolulu” is part of the promotion of pro-ecological activities among the youngest inhabitants of Zawiercie.
In particular, it aims to draw attention to pollution and air protection.
Free admission for everyone.

Environmental education has got an important role in shaping environmental habits and attitudes.

The Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will conduct ecological workshops named “Why is the blue sky so important?”. The workshops will be addressed to students of the Primary School and the Kindergarten Department in Ślęzany.

Meeting with the Eco-manager will be an excellent opportunity to gain and deepen knowledge about air protection. It will be implemented through various forms of education (talk, brainstorming, experiments, riddles, exercises).

22 October 2022 - Art competition “Bieruń with energy”

Art competition presenting renewable energy sources (RES) against the background of the Bieruń landscape.

The competition is aimed at children and adolescents from primary schools in the Bieruń commune. The works can be made in any artistic technique. The competition will end with an exhibition of all awarded works.

26-27 October 2022 - Eco-workshop "We all want to live under blue sky"

Ecology is an important element of children and adolescents education. Air pollution knowledge is the first step to understanding  how imoportant is carring out about its quality.

Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will conduct ecological workshops named "We all want to live under blue sky". The workshops will be addressed to students of the Primary School and the Kindergarten Department in Słowik.

Educational workshops will be carried out using various forms of education (talk, brainstorming, experiments, riddles, exercises).

7 - 11 November 2022 - Eco-workshop for children "It matters what we breathe"

Air quality has a huge impact on our health, environment, climate, as well as global and personal economy.

As part of educating the youngest children from smaller towns, ecological workshops were organized for students in grades 1-3 from all schools in the Wręczyca Wielka commune.
The classes introduce the basic concepts:
• what is ecology,
• what is air
• what is smog and how it arises;
• what is the risk of air pollution for health and the environment,
• what actions should be taken to reduce the risk of smog.

The form of the workshops is interactive, based on experiences and experiments.

20 November 2022 - Theatrical performance "The Great Adventure of a Little Cloud"

It is important to learn about the importance of the clean air from early childhood. As part of the project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored", the theater performance "The Great Adventure of a Little Cloud" will be held.

The children, together with heroes of the story, i.e. Cloud and the hedgehog Jerzy, go to their aunt River. Only she can show our heroes and viewers how to prevent environmental pollution, the effects of which are felt nowadays more and more.

The presentation will discuss causes of smog and methods of its reduction, waste segregation as well as water deficit and pollution.

September 2022 - June 2023 - Ecological with a book and a tale

Ecology, clean air, healthy food, recycling are the topics worth discussing with children.

The eco-manager from the Mszana commune organizes a series of meetings with preschoolers in the subdivision villages. Every first Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of the month, the eco-manager organizes a “great reading” of poems related to ecology, environmental protection and a healthy lifestyle.

It is accompanied by discussions, competitions and thematic games. Each month, other topics are discussed, including: recycling, ecological food, waste and its segregation, smog and air pollution, climate change and protection of the Earth, as well as social and family life.

24 November 2022 - Ecological Olympics “Let's save our climate! Clean air is a better life"

Do young people have a lot of knowledge in the field of ecology? The Ecological Olympics for all schools in the Lipie commune is an opportunity to be checked.

The goals of the competition are: shaping ecological awareness and appropriate attitudes towards the natural environment, as well as developing interests in ecology. An important element is developing the ability to use the possessed knowledge to solve ecological problems.

The competition is divided two stages. In the first stage, there will be screenings of films on the negative effects of air pollution on human health and the benefits of using alternative energy sources. The second stage will be the ecological knowledge test. Laureates will receive ecological awards.

7 November 2022 - Eco-workshop “We have blue skies when we care for clean air”

What is the best age to start environmental education? We answer - any age!

The Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will conduct ecological workshops named "We have blue skies when we care for clean air". The workshops will be addressed to preschoolers from the Kindergarten in Lelów.

Children will be introduced to the problem of air pollution and smog through having fun and various activities. It is very important to arouse children's curiosity about the world and make them aware of the dangers of bad air quality.

3 November - 8 December 2022 - Art Competition "How to bite the SMOG"

An art competition is aimed at students from grades 1-3 of primary schools and children of the oldest kindergarten groups.

The word "smog" is a mixture of English words: "smoke" and "fog”. This cluster of expressions spread throughout the world, perfectly describing the phenomenon. It can be said that smog is just such an artificial fog that was created unnaturally as a result of human activities and certain unfavorable circumstances of nature.

The aim of the work is to perform a presentation of the smog phenomenon by any chosen method. The use of recycled materials will be an advantage.
Papers can be submitted to class teachers until November 25.

The results will be announced on December 8. The most interesting works will be awarded.

9 November 2022 - Educational workshop "Sky under which we want to live is blue"

What is air and why should it be pollution-free? What are the main sources of air pollution and their impact on our health?

15 November 2022 - Educational workshop "Blue sky is our common cause"

Caring for air purity should be part of everyone's life, so we should start environmental education from an early age.

The Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will conduct educational workshops for children from the Kindergarten in Nakło.

Through play, children learn about the properties of clean air and learn how important it is for life and health.

Through the experiment, children will see how pollutants from domestic stoves spread through the air.

They will also learn how to take care of the air on a daily basis.

The Advent Calendar is a way to count down the days until Christmas.

Ecomanager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship, will open the Advent eco-calendar every day on 24 days of December.

The calendar will include ideas for ecological Christmas decorations and gifts.

The event is a great opportunity to countdown the days until Christmas and test your skills in the prepared eco-challenges.

DIY (Do It Yurself) projects and prepared challenges will be an excellent opportunity to spend time with your children.

14 - 18 November 2022 - "Academy of Blue" What should everyone know about air?

A weekly cycle of posts and articles on air quality starts on the International Clean Air Day.

Among the educational topics there are subjects concerning: types of air pollution, industrial and transport emissions, municipal and household sector emissions, the suspended dust, smog, the impact of air pollution on human health, actions to improve it and the importance of clean air for the economy of individual residents and the entire country.

Posts and articles will be published on the Facebook profile and on the website of the City of Żory.

18 November 2022 - "In dancing steps to clean air"

On the occasion of the International Clean Air Day, an environmental zone will be organized with the Galeria Wiślanka Żory shopping center.

The residents will be able to meet the eco-manager and obtain information on subsidies for the replacement of the heat source and the thermal modernization of the buildings. They will learn about the deadlines resulting from applicable law. They will get help in filling in the required documents.

Many attractions have been prepared for the youngest residents, such as: an ecological art corner, ecology quizzes, dancing games and many more.
Each participant of the event will receive an eco-gift.

23 November - 30 December 2022 - Workshops "Smog our enemy! Disappear! Dont't come back!"

Smog each of us knows what it is. But does everyone know how dangerous it is?

The Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will conduct educational workshops for students of the Primary School in Poczesna.

Climate change awareness is very important in order to take remedial action. Preventing air pollution is essential to improving the quality of life.

Environmental education is the first step to understanding this problem.

14 November 2022 - Challenge "What can you do for clean air?"

The Action under the slogan "Better small deeds than big words"  will be held within the project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored".

On that day, ecomanagers working for 167 cities and municipalities in the Silesian Voivodeship will publish posts and articles showing how each person can take care of air quality with their small actions.

Viewers will be offered a challenge to do one thing that improves air quality and also publish information about the challenge on their profile with an established hashtag.

All posts and articles will be linked by one common graphic.

14 November 2022 - Workshop "What can seniors do for clean air?”

Air quality is of great importance to everyone. However, seniors are particularly hard hit by air pollution.

Therefore, the ecomanager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship is organizing  a workshop on air quality for seniors.

At the meeting, all participants will learn about the importance of clean air for the health and finances of seniors, ways to take care of air quality, opportunities for ecological heating of buildings and apartments, and sources of funding for modernization.

We will discusse about healthy lifestyle and outdoor physical activity.

14 November 2022 - Educational workshops "Goodbye smog!"

Clean Air Day is a great opportunity to emphasize how important it is to breathe healthy, uncontaminated air.

The Eco-manager of the Poraj will conduct educational workshops for children from the Local Government Public Kindergarten in Żarki Letnisko.

Reading a story will help answer the question "What to do with this smog cloud?".

Preschoolers together with the Eco-manager will prepare banners and set off on a picket to emphasize their opposition to air pollution.

18 November 2022 - Zone of Ecological Activisation of residents "Blue Sky for Everyone"

The healhty, ecological, in tune with the nature lifestyle is more and more appreciated. The relevant issue is quality of air.

Taking care of the quality of air will be the main theme of the zone of ecological activisation. The zone will be organised by Eco-managers of Association of The Beskid Agglomeration during the international ecological fair.

Within the framework of consulatancy support infromation about possibilities of increasing energy efficiency of buildings, replacement of heat sources and receiving funding for that aim will be provided.

Within the zone contests, plays for children and games activating ecological thinking for all participants will be organised.

14 - 25 November 2022 - Competition “Ecological Christmas tree decoration”

Christmas is approaching. It’s time to think about the Christmas tree, gifts and a festive atmosphere.

Participants in the competition organized by the eco-manager are tasked with making an ecological Christmas tree ornament with the use of recyclable materials.

The aim of the competition is to promote ecology and recycling and to motivate residents to reuse materials that are no longer needed.

Thanks to the use of recyclable materials, we will reduce the production of waste. Thanks to this, the holidays will be more ECO and the environment less polluted.

The competition is intended for children and adults.

15 November 2022 - Workshop “Preschooler, look at the sky!”

The problem of air quality is very important for adults, but also for children.

The science of pro-ecological behavior should be conducted from an early age.

Through active participation in experiments as well as discussion after the films watched, children will gain pro-ecological knowledge.

22 November 2022 - Interactive eco-theatre

Knowledge comes best when we combine it with emotions. Therefore, theatrical performances on ecological measures are an excellent carrier of information for children and teenagers.

As part of the project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored" there will be two theatrical performances dealing with topics related to air protection - "The great adventure of a small cloud" and "Ecoprotest".

The interactive form of performances allows for direct participation of the audience. The main subject is the promotion of pro-ecological activities, in particular, it is aimed at drawing attention to the topic of air pollution and protection, the causes of smog and ways to reduce it, the waste segregation and water deficit and pollution.

28 November 2022 - Theatrical performance "How the woodsman saved the forest"

Learning pro-environmental attitudes should start from the earliest years.

Theatrical performances that involve children through their active participation are a great way to convey important educational content.

The ecological fairy tale presents the struggles of a Forester who wants to save his beloved forest. It outlines the problem of pollution of green areas, explains where tree diseases come from and reminds about the need to keep forests clean. The show also includes personal hygiene items.

The performance is addressed to children aged 7-10.

18 November - 6 December 2022 - Eco-poem contest

Autumn days favors staying at home longer in the evenings. How about using this time creatively?

All children aged 7-15 from the Commune of Poręba can participate in the competition for a poem on ecological topics.

The aim of the competition is to shape pro-ecological attitudes, strengthen the general awareness of the need to care for the environment, inform about the threats of air pollution, familiarize oneself with renewable energy sources, arouse interest in natural sciences.

Additionally, films presenting poems recited by authors are scored.
Prizes await the winners.

22-23 November 2022 - Take care of the air - segregate waste! Even the youngest knows that waste is segregated.

As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, a series of seven workshops with children in kindergartens of the Bojszowy Commune will be organised.

The meetings will mainly focus on issues related to waste segregation. Booklets on recycling and waste segregation will be read.

Children will learn about the color markings of garbage cans. They will also be able to demonstrate their knowledge by segregating waste into prepared containers.

30 November - 1 December 2022 - Kindergarteners in the library segregate garbage.

The problem of waste, its impact on the environment, disposal and recycling concerns the whole world. Therefore, proper behavior related to waste management should be shaped from an early age.

During the European Week of Waste Reduction, the eco-counselor of the project "Silesia. Blue sky" organizes a series of four meetings for children in the city library.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, children will gain practical waste segregation skills. During exercises and experiments, they will learn the importance of recycling for the planet and all people.

28 November 2022 - Eco-workshop "How to defeat smog?"

What are the main causes of smog and how can we fight smog?

These are the main questions that the Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will answer during educational workshops for children from the Kindergarten in Huta Stara "B".

Getting to know the causes of air pollution and their impact on our health is the first step to understanding how important it is to take care of clean air.

Learning through play is the best way to gain knowledge and get to know the problem of poor air quality.

7-9 December 2022 - Competition "Decorate your house in eco style"

Christmas is precided by the time of preparing gifts and decorating houses. It  can be a great time to learn pro-ecological behavior.

The Ecomanager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship is organizing a competition for students from all over the municipality for an ecological Christmas decorations. The task will be to use ecological and recycled materials in creating ornaments.

The goal is to learn how to reduce and reuse waste. Children will also learn the rules of spatial composition.

The best works will be rewarded.

15 December 2022 - 15 January 2023 - New Year's Art Contest"Blue Leap into the New Year - my New Year's resolutions for clean air"

Who doesn't have New Year's resolutions? Every year, millions of people take them in the hope of creating positive change.

What are the resolutions of the youngest residents of the Lelów Commune, the  Eco-manager of the Northern Subregion of the Silesian Voivodeship will find out. In the organized art Contest, she will ask children what their New Year's resolutions for clean air are.

The aim of the competition is to disseminate knowledge about the threats resulting from poor air quality, raise environmental awareness and shape social behavior that is conducive to improving air quality, as well as activating the youngest to take action to prevent air pollution.

from 21 December 2022 - "Silesian municipalities under the blue sky". Online photo exhibition ending the 30th anniversary of the LIFE Programme.

In 2022, the LIFE Program of the European Union turned 30 years old.

The photo exhibition presents photos from selected municipalities included in the program "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored". It shows the beauty and diversity of the Silesian Voivodeship.

The photographs present unique places where air protection activities are carried out.

"Silesia. Blue Sky Restored" is the largest EU program on this subject.
