The interpretation of the subject of heaven in Silesia

The Museum "Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów" hosted the educational and artistic happening “Painting the Silesian sky", carried out as part of the integrated LIFE project "Śląskie. Blue sky”.

The event was attended by: Izabela Domogała, board member of the Silesian Voivodeship, and Dr. Artur Madaliński, director of the Museum. The inaugural open-air lecture on "Air pollution and the vision of showing air in the history of art" was delivered by Dr. Helena Jadwiszczok-Molencka.

Participants took part in educational walks, lectures, workshops and shows. One of them was organized by the Silesian Botanical Garden, Union of Associations, on the subject of "Land restored to nature and people". The walk was an opportunity to learn more about the nature of the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park. Among other things, the importance of plant species living in the open-air museum for air quality, the principles of maintaining green areas and the benefits of creating publicly available green urban spaces. Solutions combining greenery with the use of rainwater, mitigating the urban heat island effect and the resulting benefits for air quality were presented.

The Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal presented the possibilities of using drones in measuring air emissions and quality.

The culminating part of the event was an artistic happening with the participation of the students of the Art High School "Painting the Silesian sky". Each of the young artists made their own interpretation of the subject of heaven in Silesia in any painting or drawing technique. All the works together formed the image of the Silesian sky, and the joint photo became a symbol of the main goal of the project "Silesia. We're bringing back the blue. " The event was accompanied by training for eco-managers operating under the project "Śląskie. Blue sky".

Lecture and workshops "The energy revolution in connection with zero CO2 emission plans" was conducted by prof. dr hab. eng. Andrzej Szlęk from the Department of Thermal Technology of the Silesian University of Technology. It was also an opportunity to exchange experiences and good practice solutions during a panel with invited experts from the  Małopolska Voivodeship: Anna Ponikiewska from Tarnów and Żelisława Noworita from Oświęcim. About the beginnings of eco-managers' work in the project “Śląskie. Blue sky” also told the eco-managers of the Northern Subregion: Dominika Bukalak-Gaik and Ewa Chojnacka.

The partners of the event were: the Silesian University of Technology, the Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal and the Association of Associations of the Silesian Botanical Garden as well as the Complex of Art Schools in Katowice. The aim of the project "Śląskie. Blue sky” is to improve air quality in the Silesian Voivodeship.

Meeting was an official event in the calendar of the 30th anniversary of the European Union's LIFE Program and the Green Week of the European Union.
