Meeting of the Working Group on Air Protection as part of the "Partnership: Environment for Development" Project

Participants of the meeting during the presentation of the project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored"

On June 24, 2024, we had the pleasure of participating in the meeting of the Working Group on Air Protection as part of the "Partnership: Environment for Development" project organized by the Ministry of Climate and Environment. The main topic of the meeting was Air Protection Programs (APP), which are crucial for improving air quality in Poland.

The meeting began with a discussion on the preparation of APPs. Participants discussed the difficulties and challenges municipalities face during this process. Non-governmental organizations also presented their demands, emphasizing the need to include their recommendations in creating effective programs. A key element of this part was the analysis of the responsibilities of local government units related to the implementation of the so-called anti-smog resolution, which allowed for identifying areas requiring support and further action.

The next part of the meeting focused on the implementation of tasks included in the APP and reporting on their execution. Challenges related to the monitoring of these tasks, conducted by the Environmental Protection Inspection authorities, were discussed. Participants also presented future goals aimed at further improving the processes of reporting and implementing anti-smog measures.

One of the key points of the meeting was the presentation of best practices and support mechanisms for municipalities. Mechanisms that can assist local government units in implementing the tasks included in the APP were presented, as well as tools supporting the improvement of air quality. Participants had the opportunity to learn about comprehensive solutions supporting the implementation of APPs, presented by our organization, including through the lens of the LIFE Program. In this part of the meeting, municipalities shared their successes and challenges in improving air quality, which provided a valuable source of knowledge and inspiration.

The meeting also became an excellent opportunity to hear the opinions and suggestions of civic initiatives, such as the Polish Smog Alert and Parents for Climate. Their participation enriched the discussion with social and civic perspectives, highlighting the importance of cooperation between different entities in the fight for clean air.

We would like to thank the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the entire working group for the invitation and the opportunity to present the integrated LIFE project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored". Comprehensive implementation of the Air Protection Program for the Silesian Voivodeship. The project was presented by Barbara Kubiak, Director of the Department of Investments and Regional Projects of the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship.

The meeting was chaired by Piotr Łyczko, Deputy Director of the Department of Air Protection and Climate Negotiations at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, who ensured a professional and substantive discussion.

We are convinced that cooperation and the exchange of experiences between different entities are key to effective air protection and improving the quality of life for residents.
