Drones Monitored Air Quality in Żywiec. International Exchange of Experience in the Fight Against Smog

On February 5, 2025, air quality monitoring took place in Żywiec, with active participation from eco-managers of The Association of Communes for Ecology in Żywiec. The measurements were conducted as part of the LIFE project "Silesia. Blue Sky Restored", using modern drones operated by specialists from the Institute of Fuel and Energy Technology.
The study aimed to assess the level of pollution emitted by households and verify whether residents were complying with the provisions of the Anti-Smog Resolution of the Silesian Voivodeship. Thanks to advanced technology, the drones could precisely determine the chemical composition of the smoke emitted from chimneys, identifying harmful substances such as PM10 and PM2.5 particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and benzo(a)pyrene.
The data collected during the flights helped identify the main sources of emissions and provided essential information for further educational and control measures. Cooperation with the Institute of Fuel and Energy Technology allowed for high-quality research using equipment that ensured fast and accurate results.
The study was accompanied by an educational and informational campaign, aimed at supporting the implementation of the Anti-Smog Resolution and increasing residents' awareness of the consequences of burning low-quality fuels. During meetings with residents, alternative, environmentally friendly home heating methods were discussed, as well as the possibility of obtaining subsidies for replacing heating systems.
Conversations with residents revealed that more and more people were aware of the impact of smog on health and quality of life. Many expressed interest in replacing their old boilers with more ecological solutions.
One of the key aspects of the event was the presence of eco-managers from Slovakia, who observed the study with great interest. Their goal was to familiarize themselves with the measurement methodology and assess the possibility of implementing similar actions in their country. During the meetings, experiences related to fighting smog were exchanged, and the challenges and successes in implementing anti-smog regulations on both sides of the border were discussed.
The Slovak eco-managers emphasized that air pollution is a transboundary issue, requiring joint efforts and modern technological solutions. Their participation in the study paved the way for further cooperation aimed at improving air quality throughout the region.
The air quality monitoring in Żywiec was not only an opportunity to precisely determine pollution levels but also to educate residents and exchange experiences on an international level. Modern technologies, such as drones, enable more effective emission control and accelerate the implementation of measures to improve air quality.
