Crocuses for the Future – students for a more beautiful Tworków

The courtyard of the historic castle in Tworków was filled with laughter, cheerful voices and the sound of children at work. On a sunny autumn day, students from the Primary School in Tworków joined forces to plant 4,000 crocus bulbs as part of the project “Crocuses for the Future – Let’s Sow Beauty Together at Tworków Castle”. The initiative brought together environmental education, local cooperation and care for nature in one inspiring action.

Working together for a common goal

The project involved pupils from the school’s interest groups – Eco Team, Copernicus Science Club and the Student Council – supervised by teachers Justyna Wojda, Celina Hanczuch and Iwona Wądołowska. The idea to plant crocuses was born among members of the Eco Team, who have been actively engaged in environmental and climate-related activities for years. This time, their initiative received broad support – not only from the school but also from the entire local community.

The project was made possible thanks to Mayor of Krzyżanowice Municipality Grzegorz Utracki, who financed a large part of the initiative, and the “Jodełka” company from Bieńkowice, which provided additional support.

Support from the Anti-smog Team and eco-manager

The event was joined by the Anti-smog Team of the LIFE project “Silesia. Blue Sky Restored”, together with eco-manager Angelika Krupa, representing the Krzyżanowice Municipality. She worked side by side with the students and teachers, emphasizing that activities supporting clean air and biodiversity are closely connected.

“Initiatives like this teach young people that every small action – even planting a single bulb – matters for the environment. It’s also a great opportunity to talk about climate change, protecting nature and shaping the space we live in consciously,” – said eco-manager Angelika Krupa.

The presence of the Anti-smog Team gave the event a strong educational dimension. The students learned how greenery improves air quality and how important it is to engage local communities in pro-environmental action.

Crocuses that teach and connect

Planting crocuses became not only a lesson in ecology but also in teamwork. Deputy Mayor Wolfgang Kroczek, who welcomed the participants, highlighted that the project carries a deeper message than just beautifying the surroundings:

“This is an investment in the future – in biodiversity, in young people’s awareness, and in a sense of community. Actions like this show that caring for the environment starts with simple, local steps.”

The students eagerly set to work. Despite forecasts of rain, the weather was kind – the sun shone over Tworków Castle, and the planting turned into a joyful festival of nature. In a short time, all 4,000 bulbs were planted, promising to transform the castle grounds into a purple-and-white carpet of flowers in spring.

A delicious ending to a green day

After hours of hard work, it was time to rest and celebrate together. The young gardeners were rewarded with a delicious pizza – a small but well-deserved treat after a big effort.

Both students and teachers agreed that this is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new tradition – annual community initiatives combining education, ecology and local identity.

Tworków Castle in the colours of spring

The results of the students’ and partners’ efforts will be visible in spring, when the castle grounds will be covered with a beautiful carpet of crocuses – a living symbol of care for nature and the future of the young generation.

The “Crocuses for the Future” project showed that local actions have great power – they unite people, educate, inspire and leave a lasting mark on the shared environment. Thanks to the cooperation between the school, local authorities, sponsors, and the Anti-smog Team with eco-manager Angelika Krupa, Tworków has gained not only thousands of crocus bulbs but also hundreds of young hearts ready to act for the climate.
