A Tree That Teaches Responsibility

At Primary School No. 1 named after Tadeusz Kościuszko in Zawiercie, students celebrated Tree Day – an inspiring event that combined education, ecology, and hands-on environmental action. The guest of the day was eco-manager Andrzej Gwóźdź, who met with members of the School Anti-Smog Team to talk about the importance of trees in our environment.

During the presentation, students learned about the many roles trees play in human life and ecosystems. They discovered that trees not only produce oxygen and purify the air, but also provide shelter for animals, regulate temperature, and protect us from noise. The eco-manager also discussed the most common tree species in Poland and shared fascinating facts about the tallest and largest trees in the world.

The lesson was enriched with photos and stories about trees from different continents, allowing students to take a virtual journey through global forests. The interactive format kept everyone engaged – after the talk, students took part in an eco-quiz, competing in teams for points and reinforcing their knowledge through play.

The highlight of the event was the ceremonial planting of a linden tree on the school grounds. The new tree became a living symbol of care for the environment and a reminder that even the smallest gesture – like planting a tree – can make a real difference for the planet. The activity also sparked a discussion about responsibility for nature, the need to protect clean air, and the importance of caring for future generations.

Thanks to initiatives like this, young people learn that protecting the environment doesn’t start with large-scale projects – it begins with local actions and everyday choices that shape a more sustainable world.
